For over 25 years, I have been reading and discussing my
work at universities and other venues around the country
including Stanford University, University of California
at Los Angeles, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and Parsons the New School for Design in New York.
Sponsoring departments have included Latino studies,
border studies, creative writing, and women’s studies.
I’ve also given presentations at the American History
Museum (Smithsonian Institution), high schools,
churches, political events and retreats. I’ve read at
conferences in El Salvador, Spain, Nicaragua and Mexico.
My readings are generally followed by a lively
discussion from the audience. I have found that
audiences are especially curious about the creative
process and about writing as resistance to injustice.

I offer both a fiction and a creativity workshop in
Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I’m also available to teach
outside New Mexico. Workshops are:
Turning Our Monsters Loose
(a fiction workshop)
Stephen King once wrote, “I try to create sympathy
for my characters then turn the monsters loose.” Even
though we will not be writing horror stories, we will
be exploring the interior life of our characters,
the demons as well as the angels. Both are essential.
Characterization is one of the most—if not the
most—important skills for an emerging writer. In this
workshop we will learn techniques to uncover what your
characters struggle with in silence, as well as what
they disclose to the outside world. You will be
surprised and inspired by what they reveal. “Turning Our
Monsters Loose” is for beginning fiction writers.

You have procrastinated and have lost touch with the
passion that drove you to write in the first place. You
put off getting back on the wagon and on course. In this
workshop we will learn tricks of the trade that turn
writing into an addiction. I will introduce the Kaizen
method that allows us to “rewire” the part of the brain
which generates feelings of fear. By the end of this
workshop, you will be ready to design a writer’s life
that works for you and brings a lifetime of

the richness of something new. When she gives a reading,
audiences are mesmerized.
